Pilates Group Class Descriptions:

Beginner Group Apparatus Classes :  These group classes are designed for clients who are interested in pursuing a pilates education and workout, but who also need an attractive price point ($20) and flexible scheduling options. All clients interested in this route must first schedule a Kinetic Evaluation/Initial Studio Visit.  During this $65/1-hour session, this first-time client will be assessed for any physical concerns that may prove them to be an inappropriate fit for a group class (private training would be advised.)  Also during this KE/ISV, new clients will learn all of the fundamental movement parameters and bio-mechanics required as physical and mental vocabulary during a basic pilates workout. Beginner group clients work to understand the application of the Pilates Fundamentals and how they correspond with and are incorporated into every beginner-series exercise.

Intermediate Group Apparatus Classes:  These exciting classes focus on building strength, flexibility and endurance in the body through greater number of repetitions and increased intensity.  Intermediate group clients work to master all of the beginner-series exercise as well as tackle most exercise in the intermediate-series.  Importance of flow and exercise transition is introduced at this level.

Advanced Group Apparatus Classes:  These fast-moving, vigorous classes challenge ongoing pilates apparatus clients with flow and valued transitions. All of the Intermediate and some Advanced-Series exercises (those deemed safe for group instruction) are included in this class.  The advanced group class moves back toward fewer repetitions of each exercise (than in the intermediate class), as this better represents this exercise system, unique to Joseph Pilates.

Pilates Mat Classes: Body Balance currently offers open-level pilates mat classes so that we can accommodate all clients who wish to drop-in or pre-register.   Mat classes are an excellent way to supplement your apparatus sessions and also be sure that you are maintaining the highest level of fitness and mind-body connection.  All clients are eligible for group mat classes. All Pilates Mat classes take place at EVOLVE YOGA on Bickett Blvd. in Raleigh.

GYROKINESIS® As the basis for the Gyrotonic Expansion System®, Gyrokinesis moves through seated, lying down and standing positions during this 60 or 90 minute workout.   Originally called Yoga for Dancers, this class allows the client to work on the entire body through natural elements of spinal movement: arch, curl, side-bend, spiraling and circular, as well as all other joint articulation.  This approach systematically and gently works the joints and muscles through rhythmic and undulating movements.  These movements stimulate the body's internal organs while different corresponding breathing patterns are integrated along with the movements.

In Gyrokinesis, fluidity is key. Postures are not held for long periods of time.  Instead, postures are smoothly and harmoniously connected through the use of breath, making exercises feel and appear more like a dance and swimming, than like traditional yoga.  You will find pleasure in movement, in opening and creating space within the body and deepening the connection from your center through your extremities.  Be prepared to build strength and endurance.

Pilates Intensives with Melissa Kakavas: These curriculum courses are a fabulous introduction to the method (beginner level) or way to deepen, hone and "clean-up" (intermediate/advanced course) your personal practice. Both Intensive Courses begin with Fundamentals and Matwork, move to the Reformer, the Trapeze Table and Wunda Chair, and then end with a dynamic teaching of the standing work. These classes vary in length from 8 to 10 weeks and require pre-registration with no make-up classes, refunds  or studio credit.  Class size is limited to 6 students.   PLEASE NO DROP-INS.
